Audi MMI Generations: How to Identify MMI 2G, 3G and MIB

Audi used the MMI name — Multi Media Interface — across several hardware generations, and as with BMW and Mercedes the generation matters more than the model year when you are specifying a CarPlay module.

The three groups that matter for retrofitting

MMI 2G — the older navigation system, built around a DVD-based map and a joystick-style MMI control. Menu graphics are comparatively low-resolution. Found across a long run of A4, A5, A6, Q5 and Q7 variants.
MMI 3G / 3G+ — a step change in display resolution and processing, with the well-known MMI joystick plus surrounding shortcut keys, and a menu design that most Audi owners would recognise as "the normal one".
MIB2 / MIB3 — the Modular Infotainment Toolkit, the current platform. MIB2 introduced a wider, flatter display; MIB3 added an always-connected layer and moved navigation data off removable media.

Identification cues that do not require a diagnostic tool

Look at the map source. If the car takes a navigation DVD, it is the oldest group. Later generations moved the map to internal storage or an SD card.
Look at the control stack. A joystick with a grid of shortcut buttons around it is the middle generation. A cleaner layout with fewer buttons and a wider display is MIB.
Look at the display aspect. MIB-era screens are noticeably wider relative to their height than the older units.
Check for a navigation SD slot or SIM slot. Their presence and location separate the later MIB variants.

Why a universal module does not exist

Each group uses a different video link and a different control protocol. A module built for the middle generation's display timing will not produce a stable picture on an older car, and the controller mapping differs too. Suppliers who advertise one part number for "all Audi" are usually selling a module that works properly on one generation and approximately on the rest — worth testing on a real car before committing to stock.

What the retrofit keeps

On all three groups the factory display, MMI controller, steering-wheel buttons and factory camera remain in use. The module switches the display between the factory system and CarPlay, and removes cleanly without coding the OEM unit.
